Winter 2011 / 12
Hello Gardeners
I missed the summer update, believe it, or not we were busy! But now with winter approaching and the recession including the Euro problems things have slowed down again. I think we are in for a quiet winter, time to update our yard area and improve our outbuildings for the spring. I will keep you updated on these improvements.
Vegetable garden
All in all, we had a good crop of vegetables, and probably the best crop of potatoes for a long time. The Purple sprouting broccoli is very good and we managed to keep the rabbits away, however we did suffer from whitefly on the broccoli. This autumn I planted 2 packets of red onion sets and one of white onion to grow over the winter for an early crop in 2012.
Landscape News
I am pleased to report that the wild life garden scheme, as reported in our spring update, has moved ahead. We used wild flower turf laid in the Autumn and have got a good show of late flowers and even noticed a few bees in the area, we now look forward to the spring show.
Our on-going landscape scheme is moving to completion and hopefully we will have photos on both schemes in the future.
Artificial lawns are still in demand and are proving successful in shaded gardens where living lawns have difficulty in growing. Artificial lawns are a lazy gardeners dream and a mature gardener’s maintenance friend!
Staff Report
It is twelve months since Mick retired and I hear his golf has improved no end. Dave, his successor, is now making his own mark within the company, with several schemes under his belt. His latest project (still in the costing stage) is a full size football pitch in artificial grass, we wish him luck on this project!
Another Dave joined us during early summer and at the moment he is split between landscape and maintenance projects. He is a big lad with plenty of muscle power which is needed within our type of work.
Look forward to speaking to you again the spring. I am sure we will survive the ravages of the winter.
